Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture and how does it work?

Acupuncture is a treatment that involves the insertion of very small sterile needles into specific points on the body in order to cause a therapeutic effect.  Acupuncture points typically lie along the body’s Meridian Channels along which Qi (energy) flows. Most of the acupuncture points and Meridian Channels we use on our animal patients are transposed from humans, although many are specific to the species. Free flowing Qi helps the body maintain balance.  From a western medicine standpoint these acupuncture points are located near neurovascular bundles - sites that communicate with the nervous system. Chemicals are released when stimulated by the needle to then activate the body’s natural abilities to heal and promote physical balance.

What can acupuncture be used for?

Acupuncture can be used for a wide variety of ailments including:

  • Pain - acute and chronic

  • Weakness

  • Gastrointestinal issues - Vomiting/Diarrhea/Weight loss

  • Skin disease - Wounds, infections, allergies

  • Autoimmune conditions

  • Seizure disorders

  • Cancers

  • Reproductive health and much more

Acupuncture can be an excellent complementary treatment for many conditions or even the main treatments for others.

Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine is one of the oldest forms of medications. TCM herbal medicine began as an extension of nutrition. A single herb was added to a dish, to enhance its effect on the energy of the body. This has evolved to the hundreds of TCM herbal formulae used today. It is more tailored to fit the presentation of the patient than your typical western medications. In TCVM there are many different patterns for the “same condition”. Each patient is evaluated based on their history, clinical signs, tongue, pulse and other physical parameters. Based on these findings an herbal medication may be recommended for your pet to help provide balance and comfort to your pet faster than just acupuncture alone. In animals, acupuncture and Chinese herbs work very well together. Acupuncture provides a more immediate benefit and herbs provide longer term home treatment between visits.

TCVM herbs are used in dogs and cats to treat many conditions. These may include, among others: skin conditions such as allergies or infections, gastrointestinal conditions such as vomiting, diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease or constipation, kidney disease, cystitis or other bladder problems, urinary incontinence, liver problems, heart problems, respiratory problems eg asthma or bronchitis, painful osteoarthritis, anxiety, hormone imbalances and behavioral problems, geriatric health issues and immune imbalances.TCVM herbs are also used as part of a cancer support plan, and can be used with or without chemotherapy.

Herbal formulae are then prescribed based on the TCM diagnosis, and also which will best help the patient’s signs and symptoms.TCM herbal medicine began as an extension of nutrition.
